GIF of a CME modelled from the Sun to Earth

Coronal Mass Ejections

During the summer of 2022, I worked on a research project with a supervisor from my university. The project involved the modelling of CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejections) which are similar to solar flares but have the potential to cause mass damage to electronics and satellites in rare cases such as the Carrington event. My role was to use the simulation software developed by my supervisor to find improvements and failure points so that it could be improved. The GIF shows a typical CME that hit Earth. More details on the simulation software can be found here. Below is a poster summarising the project and my work on it.

The project predominantly required me to use my Python skills in a Linux terminal environment but I also learned about machine learning: how a Gaussian process surrogate works and how to use it.
